Obama Goes Grassroots

Very interesting story out of Cleveland today. If you ever had any doubts that Obama really does plan to go grassroots, read this.

Sirota is right to suggest that DC insiders will call this scandalous. But Obama is right to do it anyway.

What? It's OK to accept $2000 checks from the party faithful but wrong to ask average Americans to donate $5 or $10 to someone they support? Unless you believe in a politics both by and for elites, that makes no sense.

As several of the commenters over at Hotline pointed out, you can't build a movement without getting people to invest some part of themselves. Donating money is more than just an economic commitment; in politics, it can also a psychological and emotional one. As a former community organizer, Obama clearly understands that.

As to the whole "they are too poor to be asked for donations" nonsense, well... it really is just nonsense. Follow that argument to its logical conclusion and you're going to have to, among other things, roll back any and all taxes on the working poor. That's not what his opponents are suggesting, are they?
