I don't think this will work for him, but you have to give him credit for trying:
Giuliani made his sharpest case for moving beyond social issues this weekend in Iowa, telling The Des Moines Register, "Our party is going to grow, and we are going to win in 2008 if we are a party characterized by what we're for, not if we're a party that's known for what we're against."
Asked about abortion, he said, "Our party has to get beyond issues like that."
This is honestly the first thing I've seen from any of the men running for the GOP nomination that would suggest they understand just how much things have changed in the past few years. The problem, of course, is that realignments aren't just about leadership. Realignments aren't top-down phenomena.
Then again, maybe Rudy knows something I don't. Maybe conservatives are ready to give up on social issues and move on to... what exactly? I'd be a bit more willing to consider this if I knew how to answer that question.
