Just Imagine...

Salon's Blog Report is doing a good job capturing the pro-gun response from members of the right to yesterday's incident at VA Tech. Here's one example:

Right-wing pundit Michelle Malkin, who, citing an op-ed written by a Virginia Tech spokesperson, noted on her weblog that the university prohibits handguns. She then quoted a weblog post from "Andrew's Dad," who wrote: "Just imagine if students were armed. We no longer need to imag[in]e what will happen when they are not armed."

Can someone please explain to me how this is an example of what happens when students aren't armed? Or does the shooter in this incident not count?

As for what would have happened had additional students been carrying guns, we need look no further than this story to imagine the consequences:

He is Asian, he lives in the dorm where the first shooting occurred and he recently broke up with his girlfriend. He also happens to have a Web blog packed with pictures in which he poses with firearms. On the Internet, Wayne Chiang is as good as convicted.

He has received 37,000 hits on his Web site over the past several hours, many containing death threats, he says.

"Right now pretty much the Internet thinks it is me," Chiang told ABC News. "I am just interested in trying to clear my name.

"It was five for five. I was Asian, I lived in [the dorm], I go to V Tech, I recently broke up with my girlfriend, and I collect guns," Chiang, who initially contacted ABC affiliate KNXV, said.

Three separate federal sources have told ABC News Chiang is not a suspect or a person of interest in their investigation.

I realize that my making the following statement is likely to have no impact on the larger political world, but nevertheless: I can say with absolute certainty that there are no circumstances under which I would work at a university that allowed its students to carry concealed weapons. None whatsoever.
