Meanwhile In Iraq....

Three important points worth noting today:

+ Today is the 4th anniversary of the president's famous "Mission Accomplished" moment. ThinkProgress breaks down the impact of the war both before and after that moment. E+P looks at how the story was covered by the NYT.

+ McClatchy reports that the cost of the war will now unarguably exceed one half of a trillion dollars. That is ten times the amount this administration once predicted.

+ Andrew Sullivan highlights three key political events that have taken place in Iraq over the past week. Whether the surge is making military progress or not is irrelevant if the Iraqis cannot make political progress. Unfortunately, everything we are seeing is that they are both unwilling and unable to do so. Given that even the most vocal proponents of the surge recognize that it can only be successful if the Iraqis work out some sort of political reconciliation, these recent developments are of enormous importance.
