Mitts Muffs

Will someone please explain to me just what the hell is wrong with Mitt Romney? I thought he was supposed to be a serious candidate.

"There is no work more important to America's future than the work that is done within the four walls of the American home," Romney said. He also criticized people who choose not to get married because they enjoy the single life.

"It seems that Europe leads Americans in this way of thinking," Romney told the crowd of more than 5,000. "In France, for instance, I'm told that marriage is now frequently contracted in seven-year terms where either party may move on when their term is up. How shallow and how different from the Europe of the past."

As Digby points out, this view of France comes not from reality but from a movie. Which is odd considering what he said next:

"We're shocked by the evil of the Virginia Tech shooting...Pornography and violence poison our music and movies and TV and video games. The Virginia Tech shooter, like the Columbine shooters before him, had drunk from this cesspool."

In related news, Atrios reminds me to point out some of the data buried within the latest Newsweek poll. In a hypothetical Romney vs. matchup, he's down 22 points to Clinton, 29 to Obama, and 37 to Edwards. As a presidential candidate, the guy makes Goldwater look like a winner. And yet all the bobbleheads in DC continue to treat him as a man of serious substance. It's as if they live in a parallel universe or something.

Oh, wait....
