The Bush administration today threatened to a veto a House defense spending bill over a 3.5 percent pay raise for U.S. soldiers and a $40/month increase in benefits for military widows, among other provisions. The legislation passed the House today 397-27.
The White House claims that a 3.5% increase is "unnecessary."
Under normal political circumstances, you'd expect everyone would be rushing to outdo one another with proposed increases. These are obviously not normal circumstances. Bush never vetoes legislation, but here he is prepared to make an exception.
I can't wait to see how he spins this.
