WaPo: The Gonzales Coverup

The Washington Post editorial board seems to be finally waking up. Nevertheless, I cannot help but take a shot at their opening:

WHY IS IT only now that the disturbing story of the Bush administration's willingness to override the legal advice of its own Justice Department is emerging? The chief reason is that the administration, in the person of Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, stonewalled congressional inquiries and did its best to ensure that the shameful episode never came to light...

What was the administration doing, and what was it willing to continue to do, that its lawyers concluded was without a legal basis? Without an answer to that fundamental question, the coverup will have succeeded.

Yes, the chief reason is that the administration has stonewalled efforts to get to the truth. A second reason, however, would be that the news media in general, and the Washington Post in specific, never bothered to investigate the actions and activities of this administration at any point over the past 6 years. As Glenn Greenwald has made clear on what now seems like an endless series of occasions, it has been obvious for quite some time that the administration has been willfully breaking the law. Had the Washington Post decided to investigate their behavior sooner, the story would no doubt have "emerged" sooner.

Today's entry from Greenwald is here. Take a look.

UPDATE: Wonderful. When asked a direct question about this, Bush replied that he isn't "going to talk about it." He had his accountability moment, after all.
