Sunday Evening Reading

One of the nice things about summer break is that I have some extra time on Sundays to read the more lengthy pieces offered up by many of the nation's newspapers. Today is a particularly good day for such pieces, including:

+ A lengthy op-ed from BU's Andrew Bacevich on the history failure that was and is the institution of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

+ The NYT offers an excellent primer on the distinct histories of the West Bank and Gaza strip.

+ In the Washington Post, Dana Priest and Anne Hull follow up last year's Walter Reed expose with an examination of the failure of our military health care system to adequately provide for the mental health needs of returning war veterans.

+ Neal Ascherson has a fascinating review of Frederick Taylor's new history of the Berlin Wall. Its the sort of review that makes me wish there were more hours in the day that I could dedicate to reading books like this one.
