It Bears Repeating...

Just in case you, like most of the rest of congress, missed these stories when they first came to light a few years back, the Washington Post today has a helpful recap of the long running dispute between Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and the truth.

Or rather, I should say that it was intended as a helpful recap, but isn't. I realize that journalists get tired of writing the same things over and over. No doubt that would drive me crazy if I had to do it. But given that Gonzales's credibility is something that many Americans are only just now beginning to consider, it really would be helpful for them to provide more information than this:

Gonzales told senators earlier this year that allegations that he had been untruthful "have been personally very painful to me." But Gonzales's critics on and off Capitol Hill say he has had trouble with the truth for more than a decade, pointing to a controversy over Gonzales's account of why Bush was excused from jury duty in 1996 while serving as the governor of Texas.

The Post assumes their readers know that story so well that there's no need to repeat it. Given that I don't even remember all the details, and that I'm a full time student of modern American politics, I suspect that they are wrong. I realize that column space is hard to come by in print, but on the web there's literally no excuse for not providing more detail. I mean, c'mon, can't they at least throw us a link?
