No Shame

Watching the highlights of Attorney General Gonzales testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee today, I can't help but wonder: What must it be like to live your life so dedicated to another individual that you literally don't care if the entire world thinks you are a lying imbecile?

On numerous occasions today, Gonzales made it abundantly clear that he knew nothing about some of the most important decisions made in the department he supposedly manages. On other occasions, he provided answers that were so obviously deceptive that even Republican members of the committee suggested they may want to investigate him for perjury. Here, for example, are Sen. Arlen Specter's reaction at two key moments:

That's the senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary committee accusing the sitting Attorney General of the United States of lying under oath. Under normal circumstances, that would produce a crisis that would bring DC to a full stop. But when the Attorney General puts loyalty to one man ahead of loyalty to the law or to the people of the United States, life apparently just goes on. Brilliant.
