Mitch McConnell, the leader of the Republican minority in the US Senate, has long been a vigorous opponent of campaign finance restrictions. McConnell has actually been pretty consistent when asked the reasons for his opposition: restrictions on fundraising and spending violate the First Amendment, and full disclosure laws would actually be far more effective at preventing abuse.
Which is why it is interesting to learn that Sen. McConnell is the "secret Senator" blocking passage of a new law that would require Senators to file campaign finance statements electronically. The purpose of the new system, one already in use by House and presidential candidates alike? To improve disclosure!
