This isn't a new phenomenon. For years now, anyone on the right who has stood up to oppose the president has been declared an outcast, a traitor, and - gasp! - a democrat. You would think at this point it would no longer surprise me. And for the most part it doesn't. But Alan Greenspan?
This weekend on Bloomberg Television, right-wing pundit Robert Novak ripped former Fed chief Alan Greenspan because he criticizes Bush’s economic policies while hailing those of President Clinton. Novak said that Greenspan revealed himself “as a Democrat”:
[Greenspan] suddenly emerges from the sea, naked like Venus, as a Democrat. He loves Bill Clinton, he loves tax increases, he’s dismissive of Ronald Reagan as an amiable putz, he detests the Bushes.Greenspan has identified his roots as that of a Goldwater Republican, and he has said he will vote for the Republican candidate in the 2008 presidential elections.
Sure, Novak may be crazy, but he is establishment crazy. Greenspan declared Clinton more fiscally responsible than Bush, so Novak declares him a secret Dem. Never mind that the facts show Greenspan to be correct. Never mind that. Greenspan proved he is not a loyal Bushie, and in today's GOP, only loyal Bushies need apply.
