One of the problems with being a blogger / political junkie is that sometimes you get so close to the whole process that you lose perspective. If you spend all day reading blogs and news, something like this may be obvious. But when you step back for a moment and think about joe public, you realize it is anything but.
TPM Reader JB is dead on. If our new strategy in Iraq is "working," it is only doing so because we have effectively switched side. We are now backing essentially the same people we once invaded to depose. Saddam is obviously no longer involved, but his supporters are. Those Sunni tribes that we have now backed in our fight against al Qaeda and Shi'a extremism? Those were Saddam's people.
As you ponder that switch, remember that it was the alleged connection between Saddam and al Qaeda that once was the primary justification for our intervention.
