Over at Digby's place, Tristero offers an argument today that I've often seen elsewhere but haven't yet responded to. Time to correct that...
The Argument: If the Democrats don't fight hard on the confirmation of Bush's new Attorney General, it will be a harbinger of doom for the 2008 election.
My Response: This is nonsense. The 2008 election will be decided based on who wins the nomination. The AG nomination matters, and Democratic Senators should absolutely stand and fight, but it won't affect the 2008 contest. Elections are driven by candidates first, issues second.
Should they fight an Olson nomination. Absolutely. Will their success or failure tell us something about 2008? Probably not.
