What's Wrong With David Broder?

I realize that picking on Broder has become a predictable pass-time for bloggers, and as a result I usually do my best to avoid joining in. But this week I cannot help myself. This is ridiculous.

In today's column, Broder is honestly arguing that McCain is poised to stage a comeback. Given that Broder has also been arguing for the better part of a year that Bush is poised for his own political comeback, I guess this shouldn't surprise me. But still...

Here's what bothers me about Broder: He consistently - no, make that constantly - confuses nostalgia for insight; "if only things could go back to the way I imagine they once were" is his near constant refrain. But nostalgia is neither insightful nor analytical, and more often than not it leads Broder to reach conclusions that are based on nothing more than wishful thinking. And for that he's considered the "Dean of the DC Press Corps."
