The Day The Music Industry Died

I thought Radiohead's label-free album would mark the beginning of the end for major labels. I thought it was the beginning of a process that would take a decade or more. I was right about it being the beginning of the end. I was wrong about the timing. The music industry died today.

Madonna may not be what she once was, but she is still Madonna. If Radiohead doesn't need a label... if Nine Inch Nails doesn't need a label... if Madonna doesn't need a label... Who does?

And let me say this: as a musician, I couldn't be happier. Major labels have spent the last 40+ years beating creativity out of music. There were some advantages to them, but not many. And when they are gone, we won't miss them one bit.
