Andrew Sullivan nails it:

With the Biblical literalist question, you see what Bush and Rove have achieved: the suspension of secular politics in the Republican party, and, by inference, the country as a whole. This has become, thanks to Bush and Rove, a religious contest. And that's why, in today's GOP, Huckabee is the proper leader. It's a church; and he's a minister. It's a match made in heaven.

This is precisely why I think he will win. He is a perfect fit for this party. But Andrew misses the mark when he says its the fault of Bush and Rove. Not even nearly. This it the party that Reagan, Falwell, Robertson, Dobson, Bush, Rove, and many, many other like-minded "christianists" (as Sullivan calls them). Huckabee is just the logical conclusion of a long process that dates all the way back to the 1970s .
