The House just voted to make waterboarding illegal. Of course, we all know that it already was illegal - how else to explain instances where we have prosecuted people for it - but its an important gesture nonetheless. Both because it should substantially diminish the possibility of future torture and because it helps highlight the political aspects of this debate. The vote was 222-199, and almost everyone who voted for waterboarding was a Republican.
Once again, the GOP goes on record as being a party in favor of using interrogation methods employed by the Spanish Inquisition, the Gestapo, Pol Pot, and Mao. Brilliant.
