"Batten Down the Hatches" Is Not A Successful Electoral Strategy

I'm beginning to think that we're going to be able to measure the amount of life left in the Giuliani campaign in weeks rather than months. The more we learn about the way Mayor Giuliani misused the NYPD, the more we realize he has been lying. And apparently Rudy knows it, too, because here's how he has decided to handle things:

The Republican presidential candidate, asked by a Daily News reporter after a campaign event in Chicago about Nathan's city-funded wheels, nonanswered "Thank you," and later "Have a good night."

As Josh Marshall Steve Benen points out, this is essentially a "if I ignore it, maybe it will go away" strategy. Why Rudy thinks that strategy will work in a presidential campaign is beyond me. Then again, given the facts we already know, that may be his only option.

Rudy will be appearing tomorrow morning before Tim Russert in an attempt to stop the bleeding and rescue his campaign. I don't have much faith in Timmy - in fact, I have none whatsoever - but in this case things may be so bad for Giuliani that the appearance alone may sink him. Should make for some interesting Tivoing!
