Follow the NH Recount

New Hampshire has just started a complete hand recount of all of the ballots cast in the recent primary election, and the results are being posted online here.

So far there aren't any major errors, but there sure are plenty of small ones. In Manchester Ward 5, for example, Obama lost 39 votes, Clinton lost 61, Edwards lost 38, and Kucinich lost 3. Meanwhile, no one gained any votes. Or at least, no one gained any votes here. In other wards, people often picked up 5-10 votes.

There's only one county reported so far, and assuming it is representative of the others (an assumption which I of course have no reason to make), the final result won't much change. The errors, it would seem, are truly random. And I know that should reassure me, but I have to be honest - it does not. I was expecting to see some random error. What I wasn't expecting was to see this much. If this is what happens when we have a paper trail, imagine what might happen when we do not!

Either way, an interesting exercise that might be worth following.
