I missed the Republican debate last night, but by all accounts it was a rough one. Shockingly, not only did Fred Thompson show up, he decided to use his appearance to hammer Mike Huckabee. This morning Huckabee appeared on MSNBC's Morning Joe (don't ask what I was doing up at that hour), and they spent a fair bit of the segment talking about the debate. Based on what I saw, I have to reiterate my prediction - he's going to win the nomination.
Two lines stood out for me.
First, when asked what he thought was going on with Thompson last night, Huckabee smiled and said that "maybe he needs to take his Medimusal Metamucil. He was in a really bad mood!" Then, in response to a question about how Thompson tried to paint him as a "liberal" who is part of the "blame America first crowd," Huckabee responded (not an exact quote, but close), "If you're going to shoot at someone, make sure you have some ammunition first. The way he was shooting last night, he was so far off the mark that he's likely to lose the endorsement of the NRA."
After he left, they spent the next 3 minutes talking about how he's a better communicator than was Ronald Reagan. And somewhere in Florida, Rudy Giuliani died a little inside.
Update: TPM has video. And the spelling of Metamucil has been corrected. And yes, I'm glad to say I had no idea how to spell it!
