Our system really is stupid beyond words. We pay far more than the rest of the world for our care, and we get so far less. Worse, through our unnecessarily high prices we help subsidize the cost of care - prescription drugs in particular - for the rest of the world. Combined with our national security policies, its as if we have decided to adopt a set of policies that give us all of the costs of empire with none of the benefits.
