John McCain is famous for being a straight-talking maverick. And every time I read something like this, I can't help but wonder why.
After having posted this bit of reporting, Michael Scherer then uses two separate updates to offer two possible justifications for McCain's actions. And yet, even granting both of them, they don't change the fact that McCain is very clearly and explicitly lying about his own campaign. Nevertheless, I fully expect the myth of the straight-talker to continue.
Why? I honestly don't know. There really is no logical explanation for this behavior. Aside, I suppose, from the fact that the press corps like McCain, because McCain makes them feel important. And reporters love nothing more than to be made to feel important.
Why, oh why, can't we have a better press corps?
