As much as I enjoy reading Andrew's blog, I have to say... lately I'm learning more from his readers than from him. Here's today's gem:
The problem is that establishment Democrats have been so traumatized by what occurred in the 1980s and 1990s that they simply don't recognized this opportunity for what it is - a Reagan-style realignment that could potentially shape politics and political discourse for the next generation. They're like shell-shocked soldiers who haven't recognized the enemy has stopped shooting and is retreating from the battlefield.
Pitch perfect. We don't need someone who is well prepared to fight yesterday's battles. We need someone who is prepared to define the terms of the battles we will fight tomorrow. A defensive strategy (i.e. triangulation) was essential in the 1990s because the nation was still largely aligned with the vision put forth by the GOP. But to pursue a politics of triangulation today would be absurd. Triangulate with whom, ourselves?
