Bits and Bobs

My Nader-inspired rant seems to have taken all of the blogging energy out of me, so.... some quick updates before I step away from the computer for a bit:

+ John McCain is a liar, and Newsweek has the goods. Lying, it seems to me, would not be his best defense when faced with scandalous accusations. Neither would, I would argue, hiding from the press behind his criminal defense lawyer. McCain went to great lengths to issue complete and total denials yesterday. As I heard him do this, I knew he had made a serious and potentially fatal mistake. Nothing sets the press on you more than daring them to find dirt. Nothing, I suppose, except daring them to find dirt and then going into hiding. As my conservative friends always tell me about eavesdropping and expansive police powers, if you are doing nothing wrong, you have no reason to be afraid nor to hide.

+ As bad as the NYT and WaPo stories (with updates, too!) might yet be for McCain, this might be worse. The level of hypocrisy this man is willing to tolerate in his own life really saddens me.

+ Here's a great new defense of the McCain story from one of his conservative allies. Adultery, it would seem, is something that we can no longer speak or worry about in our political discourse. It just so...yesterday.

+ And here's a great new twist on McCain's longstanding ties to lobbyists. Not only are they running his campaign, they are also simultaneously doing lobbying work while traveling on his campaign bus. Oh, wait... I forgot. McCain's lobbyists aren't the problem. It's everyone else's lobbyists that can't be trusted. McCain is far too honorable himself ever to be moved by the persuasive powers of a lobbyist. Oh. Wait...

+ Clinton's last Senate race was widely considered to be a financial disaster. She spent nearly $30 million to beat a bunch of nobody's. She promised her donors that she had learned her lesson. Except, well... She hadn't. $15 million on campaign consultants in the month of January. $10 million to the firm that does her ad buys. $25,000 at the Bellagio. $5000 at the Four Seasons. The Four Seasons?

+ GOP Rep Rick Renzi is a scumbag. No, really. A scumbag. I hope they send him to one of the nice prison facilities he and his law-and-order, conservative colleagues so vigorously supported and then let him rot there.

+ As a fellow AZ pol, McCain knows Renzi well. He even made Renzi a co-chair of his campaign. So I think McCain should do a bit more than "withhold judgement."

+ And the best part about Renzi? This investigation is linked directly to the US Attorney firings scandal. The "Republican Culture of Corruption" isn't just a slogan. It's a way of life!

+ The U.S. intelligence wants to hunt for terrorists inside World of Warcraft. This is a joke, right? World of Warcraft?

+ Sometimes it is worth remembering... there is still hope for humanity. Erm... or maybe not. It all hangs by a very, very thin thread, it would seem. Bah.
