No time for serious blogging today, so these quick updates are going to have to do.
+ Was Hillary actually about to run out of money? Or was it all a very clever ruse to get people to buy the idea of her as the underdog? Frontrunners and movements often produce backlashes - was that the goal here? Or was it just a very clever fundraising ploy? Because both seem to be working right now.
+ Romney dropped out of the race today, in case you somehow missed it. And his speech was what you'd expect from a man who is clearly willing to say anything to anyone. Why'd he leave us? It was the war, of course. If he stayed in, the Dems might win, and that would mean a surrender to the terrorists. And yes, that's damn near an exact quote. The man is a joke. For the last 24 hours all I was reading was how he wanted to get out of the race early so that he could begin planning his 2012 return. But never mind all that - it's all about the war! Terror! Be afraid! Nice to see Obama call him on this nonsense.
+ That's the long version on Romney's exit. Here, courtesy of TBogg, is the shorter one:
Our country, our world, our culture, our existence face enormous threats. I quit.
And the even shorter one, this time from Jon Stewart: "Fuck you." I'll have his full analysis once they post it later tonight.
+ Not content to live with Nixon's famous "if the president does it, it isn't illegal" interpretation of the law, our wonderful new Attorney General decided to expand that argument today: if the president can get his Dept of Justice to write him a note saying his conduct is legal, he can't ever - ever - be prosecuted for it. That is, of course, precisely what Madison had in mind when he was working on this. Of course.
+ Mr. Straight Talk just missed a huge vote in the Senate today. He's for the stimulus package, but apparently not enough to cast the deciding vote on it. What a maverick! What a principled man! What backbone!
+ This is one of the best homemade political flyers I've seen this year.
+ Kate Michelman has written one hell of an endorsement for Obama / defense of feminism / swipe at Chris Matthews over at Salon. Must read.
