It's official: Clinton had to loan her campaign $5 million in January. That brings her January total to $18.5 million, a bit less than half of what Obama raised. It also suggests that she must have spent virtually everything she's got. Today she's asking her supporters to raise $3 million in 3 days.
Advantage: Obama
UPDATE: It seems many people around the Interwebs think this is "shady." (See many comments here, for example). For the record, I don't see anything shady about this.
The point isn't the ethics of this, nor is it the politics. It's all about logistics. You need money - lots of money - to run from now until June. Obama has it. Right now, Clinton doesn't. And that's huge. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it may turn out to be the biggest story to come out of Super Tuesday. Because if she can't turn the money around, I don't see how she can win.
UPDATE II: As Micah Sifry points out at TPM, this may end up being the biggest story of the entire campaign. Take a look.
UPDATE III: Some context:
Hillary Clinton reported that the couple now has a net worth estimated at between $17.4 million and $53.7 million.
They have deep pockets, but only so deep...
UPDATE IV: I have to quote Sullivan here:
It's four times Obama's net worth. But she's the alleged tribune of the poor. Like her husband was black.
