The old rule of thumb is that the frontrunner never asks for debates. Ever. Only challengers need and want them.
The demand for Fox debates was a big mistake, as it gives Obama an opening to push back. Fox was cut out of the Democratic debate process thanks to a coordinated campaign by the progressive netroots, and they are already stepping up to protest Clinton's demands.
