Pre-Debate Bits and Bobs

A bunch of things that probably deserve their own post but won't get them tonight....

+ Members of the Senate were set to meet today to try and reach some sort of compromise on FISA reform. Only one problem - the Republicans didn't show up. Bush had apparently told them that he was unwilling to compromise, and as always, they are turning that into a demand for bipartisanship. Because as GOP uber-strategiest Grover Norquist once said, for members of his party "bipartisanship is another name for date rape."

+ And its not just going to be a war of words, either. House Republicans have put together a new ad that quite literally steals ideas, themes, and even lines from the TV show 24 and turns them into an attack ad designed to scare the crap out of anyone who opposes their ideas for an Imperial executive. I would say the descent into self-parody is complete, but I doubt it. I'm sure they will find some way to go lower.

+ People are still missing the point of the McCain story. It isn't about the sex. It is about the legislative favors he provided to a high-profile, high-power telecomm lobbyist.

+ That's right, a telecomm lobbyist. Like the ones that he apparently didn't take nearly $1.2 million in campaign contributions from. Or something.

+ Meanwhile, McCain may have a serious campaign finance problem on his hands. And by problem I mean problem.

+ The Obama campaign is swinging hard at the new pro-Hillary 527 that her supporters have put together in an attempt to save her candidacy.

+ Good news from Iraq. Sadr looks set to continue his cease-fire, at least for a few more months.

+ Do illegal immigrants affect wages? Don't believe the hype.

+ John Cole is unimpressed by Karl Rove's new WSJ column offering advice to McCain on how to take on Obama:

Under Karl Rove's advice, President Bush became someone who had the complete and total support of the entire country in a time of crisis, and squandered it to the point that he was barely re-elected and now sits at a permanent 30-35% in the polls. Some genius. It is time to start calling this asshole's bluffs, and long past time to start recognizing what he is- the mastermind of the worst administration of my lifetime. And I was alive during Carter.
