OK, I've listened to and read some really stupid things during this campaign, but this tops them all. In fact, I think I can say with absolute confidence that nothing can top this.
For the record, periodically: in a sporadic manner.
If you honestly believe that Obama in any way - intentionally or otherwise - meant for this to be a sexist remark, you need to have your head examined.
UPDATE: You want to know what sexism looks and sounds like? Take a look at this.
Words matter. Use the right ones when they are appropriate and they will retain their meaning. Use the wrong ones during the wrong moments and eventually they will become meaningless.
UPDATE II: Just in case you aren't convinced...do you think this woman would marry a man who was even the least bit sexist? Really?
UPDATE III: Not to belabor the point, but TNR's Dayo Olopade is on to something with this:
I think it's wise to note that Obama's domestic existence has been dominated by females since birth--in every direction. A single mother raised him, and he, in turn is raising two young girls. Horizontally, of course there is Michelle (whose 'strong woman' cred is getting quite the airing this week) and of course, his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, a teacher in Hawaii. In addition to being profiled in the New York Times Magazine last month, Soetoro-Ng has recorded an insightful interview touching upon her upbringing alongside Obama.
Not only does the segment contain a treasure trove of humanizing moments, the family photos (especially @ 1:44) are a jaw-dropping reminder that the "post-racial thing" is not just some screwball, so-crazy-it-might-work proposition for America's politics, but an indigenous outcropping of Obama's personal life.
