Way back in the early days of the campaign, Obama made news by claiming that he would be willing as president to order strikes inside Pakistan if necessary. At the time he was widely criticized as naive, most notably by Clinton and McCain.
I didn't get it then, and I don't get it now. As just one example, does anyone really think that any of them - Clinton, Obama, or McCain - would ever hesitate to order strikes on Osama bin Laden anywhere in the world? McCain has said he would "follow bin Laden to the gates of hell" if necessary. What, hell is acceptable but Pakistan is not? As I said, I don't get it.
Anyway, as Matt Y points out here, the CIA recently did just what Obama suggested, and it is apparently the first such mission of many.
Nevertheless, McCain tonight continued to attack Obama on this point. So I'd love to know: is McCain planning on condemning these attacks on a senior al-Qaeda commander as naive? If not, why not?
We're no longer talking about hypotheticals here. The strike has already happened. As a potential Commander in Chief and President of the United States, what is his position on this strike?
