Economic blogging apparently took up most of my time today, so I'm going to have to roll up everything else into a single post. In no particular order:
+ Its now 5 years since the start of the Iraq war. That's longer than every war the U.S. has fought since the Revolutionary War with one exception - Vietnam. After all this time in Iraq, violence and corruption are still the norms, with the Pentagon forced to spin good news from chicken farmers - I'm not making this up - to paint a happy picture.
+ Back here at home, the debate over the war rages on. The NYT offered up nine - count 'em, nine - editorials on the state of things. Feel free to read em all if you'd like, but if you are pressed for time, John Cole offers up a great f-bomb ladened summary here. As for the potential presidents, McCain wants to let al Qaeda set out strategy by offering up another 100 years in Iraq. Clinton claims Obama is all talk. And of the three, only Obama can claim he was right about this when it mattered. That should matter, shouldn't it?
+ The House is standing tall - very tall - on domestic surveillance. Forget party. If you have loyalty to the US constitution, this is a moment of immense historical import. And remember, failure to secure support for this bill in the Senate or a presidential veto would also be positive outcomes. With no new laws, FISA remains as it was just a few years before. If we can outlast Bush on this one, we have won.
+ Not that this is news, but White House press secretary Dana Perino is an idiot. No, really. She is. I realize that is a very unkind thing to say about another human being, but it is true.
+ Yes, Sen. David Vitter has admitted to frequenting prostitutes. But he wants you to know he's nothing like Gov. Spitzer. There is "an enormous difference" between what he and Spitzer did. He wouldn't say, however, precisely what that difference was, aside from the obvious fact that he, unlike Spitzer, has refused to resign and walk away.
+ Global warming is turning Ireland brown. Could we please hurry up and do something about this? What is it going to take?
