When I first read yesterday that Obama was planning a sit down with FoxNews, I have to admit that I was worried Obama had lost his mind. Progressive activists have done a pretty good job isolating FoxNews over the past year or so, and with plunging ratings, this surely isn't the time to let up.
But then I read this from TPM and my worries were gone:
A senior Obama adviser vows that he will "take Fox on" when he appears on the network this Sunday, though it's unclear yet just how.... The senior Obama adviser insists that Obama is under no illusions about Fox and what it represents, and that this isn't about courtship at all, and vows a confrontational approach on Sunday.
Here is what the adviser IM-ed me about this today:We are clear-eyed about Fox's role in the dissemination and amplification of Republican talking points this election. They have been the tip of the spear when it comes to repeatedly broadcasting some of the most specious of rumors about Obama. He is going on their Sunday show to take Fox on, not because we have any illusion about their motives or politics in this election.
Remember the way Bill Clinton's appearance on Fox galvanized progressive activists back in 2006? If Obama were to come out swinging hard this weekend, I have to imagine it would do the same thing. Add to that the impact it might have on Hillary's "only I can take on the GOP" argument, and well...
