This one comes from the way back machine (and via Jon Taplin):
"The people of England have been led in Mesopotamia into a trap which it will be hard to escape with dignity and honour. They have been tricked into it by a steady withholding of information."
That was T.E. Lawrence, a.k.a. Lawrence of Arabia, in an interview with the Times of London in 1920. Britain spent four decades lost in Mesopotamia, and in the end, as Jon remarks, they had absolutely nothing to show for it. Except a broken empire, I suppose.
