Bits and Bobs

Somehow I always forget at the beginning of each new semester... prepping new lectures is a lot of work! Some things that happened while I was working...

+ Former White House Press Sec. McClellan is mad at Bush, but he's really pissed at the people around him. Of course, they all "serve at the pleasure of the president," so... But seriously, wow. Who knew little Scottie had it in him?

+ A late-summer surprise? Please, no. Please? The source reads like Richard Armitage, which makes this much more believable than most random stories. Not good.

+ Knowing everything I know abut McCain, this little bit of info doesn't surprise me at all. Nor should it you. As Hilzoy rightly points out, McCain is so certain of his honesty and integrity that he rarely stops to examine how his actions might look to others. That's a recipe for political disaster, which is why this fall promises to be quite fun.

+ HBO showed the movie Recount. I'm sure its well done, and no doubt HBO think's I'm the film's target market, but... Atrios, Steve Benen, and Digby are all right: even after nearly 8 years, its all still to raw for me to watch. Like so many others on the new netroots left, the 2000 election began a process of radicalization that fully flowered with the start of the Iraq War. There's nothing about that time period for me that is in any way entertaining, so I've no interest in watching that film. If they had broadcast it a year later, then maybe. But now? No way.

+ Obama's campaign finance reports are so large that they crash the FEC's computers. Which sounds pretty amazing, until you find out what kinds of computers the FEC uses. The FEC can't afford MS Office 2007? What am I missing here?

+ Obama is apparently now "banking" Supers, holding back their announcements until after the May 31 DNC meeting.

+ Matt/Stan is right: if you really think thru the implications of this WaPo article, its hard to reach any other conclusion than that people within the Bush Administration embezzled $15 billion.

+ Karl Rove's non-denial denials keep getting more creative, more tenuous, and less believable every day.

+ Why does everyone keep writing about this Provigil stuff? And why does it sound so... erm... intriguing?

+ This piece from Rebecca Walker on why Feminism does not equal feminism seems to me to be a very, very important piece of analysis. It includes, as just one small example, quotes like this: "Perhaps Obama is unintentionally killing feminism and facilitating the rise of 'feminisms.'" Go. Read.

+ Speaking of feminism, Spencer Ackerman has an interesting take on the possibility of an Obama-Webb ticket here. Ezra Klein provides a counter here, but he's really just riffing off Kathy here. But then Andrew counter-counters with this, so who knows?

+ I noted before that WaPo sports writer Tony Kornheiser hated taken a buyout from the Post, but in so doing, I somehow missed the fact that Tom Ricks, one of the best Pentagon reporters in modern US history, also opted out. That is a huge, enormous lost for the Post, for journalism, and for this nation. Not good.

+ Judging from this interview, it looks to me like Carly Fiorina is falling for McCain the same way that Christy Todd-Whitman fell for Bush.
