Redrawing The Political Map

A few realignment-inspired posts that I came across today:

+ To reiterate: Obama's problem isn't race, its Appalachia. And people are starting to notice. Take a look at this map. The purple section? Those are the counties where Clinton won at least 65% of the vote. And yes, they are a near perfect match for Appalachia.

It's yet another piece of evidence that suggests to me that Webb would make the perfect VP candidate for Barack. Not only is he a former Marine who served as Reagan's Sec. of the Navy, he is also the descendent of Scotch-Irish immigrants who came to the US in the 18th century and settled in the Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia. He's so perfect its hard to see how Obama could pick anyone else. Until, that is, you read this.

And Ezra is right, by the way. The level of detail in this dKos diary (the one from which the above map was taken) really does once again show the strength of the blogosphere. I realize that newspapers don't run articles of this length, but surely they could run an abbreviated version that provides the analysis. Its great that the blogosphere is so strong, but why isn't more of this stuff finding its way into the elite media?

+ Patrick Ottenhoff wonders if Obama could put Nebraska in play. Given the proximity of its one major media market to Iowa, the answer is yes. And that could help get Scott Kleeb to Congress.

+ McCain supports the RealID program. Westerners despise it. So does Obama. This could be a huge wedge issue in our favor this fall, one that permanently reshapes the way westerners think of the Democratic Party. Don't believe me? Remember that John Tester won his Senate seat 2 years back by promising to do everything in his power to roll back the Patriot Act. Westerners hate federal interference in their private lives, and no single issue has come to represent this more than the RealID program. The mountains belong to us, if we want them.

+ The Atlantic's Josh Green has a fabulous piece about the way Obama's netroots-inspired campaign is reshaping the infrastructure of the Democratic Party. Its a must read.

+ Want more evidence that the party now belongs to the Obama movement? Read this from Greg Sargent.
