The Change You Deserve?

Having just yesterday lost a special congressional election in yet another solidly Republican congressional district, the GOP today rolled out their new political strategy for the fall. After 8 years of exploding deficits, multiple terrorist attacks on US soil (9/11 and anthrax), a disastrous and unnecessary 2+ trillion dollar war, and the loss of one of the nation's most unique cities, the brain trust that runs the party decided that their problem was... wait for it... branding.

"It's not that the party's going to change, it's what we talk about and how we talk about it," he said. "You look at the Republican brand name being where it is, let's be frank about it. Iraq has been very unpopular, right? It's associated with Republicans. The president's job approval is somewhere down around 30. Those are the two big issues that hurt the brand."

Not to give you guys advice, but... your problem isn't branding, its governing. You got elected because you were able to come up with clever slogans and and subtle code words, but once in office those things did you know good. Since the 1994 "revolution" that brought you guys to power, you've been great at winning elections, but absolutely wretched at figuring out what to do next. Clever slogans are what got you, and as a result us, into this mess. I know its the only trick you've got, but itsjust not going to work.

So here's an idea I'm happy to share with you: Forget slogans. Instead, do some serious thinking and come up with some new ideas for the way this nation should be governed. And no ,"we want smaller government and lower taxes, just like Reagan!" doesn't count as anything even remotely close to a new idea. Neither does nominating for president a man who is older than nylon, The Grapes of Wrath, Cheerios, and The Golden Gate Bridge.

Oh, and one other thing. Learn to use the Internet. Because...

"the change you deserve" is also the advertising slogan of Effexor XR, a drug used to treat depression. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said today, "'Change you deserve' is of course a trademark of a an antidepressant. It does have side effects...it can make you sick. 82% of Americans have indicated that they are sick and tired of the policies that have been pursued by the Bush/Boehner Administration and they want a change."

Into the wilderness, Republicans. And don't come back until you have something interesting to say to us, OK?
